Do I really need copy editing?

In a word, yes. If it’s important to you, it needs an editor. I like to think of myself as your partner in excellence, ensuring that your writing is clear, concise and powerful. Feel free to send me your project. I'll edit or proofread one or two pages and send them back. If you think I can help you achieve the results you want, we'll proceed from there.

What kind of writing do you edit?

I can help you improve anything written in English, from a menu to a college application to a novel — and everything in between. I specialize in media writing, academic writing and marketing. I also edit website content, PowerPoint presentations, books, term papers, graduate theses, even emails. I can work in a variety of styles, including Associated Press, APA, MLA and Chicago Manual of Style.

I have years of experience helping non-native English speakers express themselves clearly in our often confusing language.

How much does editing cost?

If you search for editing services, you’ll find a wide range of pricing (and skill level.) I make it simple. I charge about $40 an hour for proofreading and about $50 an hour for copy editing. I accept payment through check, cash, PayPal and Venmo. I can work with you if you desire another form of payment. Depending on the size of the job, I may request an estimated 25 percent downpayment before we begin. If your copy is pretty clean, I can proof or edit it rather quickly. If it needs more work, it will take a little more time. But with a practiced eye and 30+ years’ experience, I can quickly help you turn good writing into polished, professional prose. See the Pricing page for more information.

How long will it take?

I can often return your work within a day or two. Depending on workload, I might not be able to return your project for a week or more. I’ll let you know up front how long the job will take, but it’s always a good idea to plan ahead and submit your work well before your deadline.

Can you give me a free cost estimate?

Yes. Just email or call me (dovetail.editing@gmail.com) (303-218-8357) with some information about your project, and I can give you an estimate right away. I’ll need to know a little bit about the subject, number of words, and whether you’ll need proofreading of a completed document or copy editing of a draft. Feel free to attach all or part of your document, which will allow me to be more accurate in the estimate. I’ll ask a few questions to ensure we’re on the same page.

Can I talk with my editor?

Of course. Unlike editing mills, where you attach your document and hope for the best, I will consult with you about your style preferences and other information you think I need. An editing mill won't let you talk with your editor. I'm always available to talk, text or email.

Is your work confidential?

Yes. I’ll never share your writing with anyone else without your permission.
